HIGH STANDARDS, ASSESSMENT, ACCOUNTABILITY, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, and STUDENT SUCCESS
TERF April 13-14, 2009 Conference
A Commitment to Excellence:
Redesigning Student Success in Early Childhood, Elementary,
Secondary and Postsecondary Education
It is my happy privilege to welcome you to the first Plenary Session of "A Commitment to Excellence". This conference series was originally conceived two years ago as a "Dropout Conference." As the TERF Board of Directors began thinking through the problem of "dropout" it became clear that "dropout" is a symptom of much wider "dis-ease" in our society encompassing not only our schools but every bit as important, our families, religious institutions and of course, cultural forces of every "meet and bound" imaginable. Quickly, our thinking merged with that of the leadership of the Houston Endowment Inc. and together we decided to structure a Conference series on what can best be termed "a success agenda".
Data collection, disaggregation and interpretation thereof has been at the core of our work. Our distinguished presenters over the next two days will be highlighting and emphasizing varying portions of the "data pile". All these activities are focused on the world of learning from Early Childhood through Post Secondary Credentialing. All of this will be published on behalf of our beneficiaries; the children, youth and young adults of Texas and the nation.
A quick glance will reveal the structure of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle School, High School – all in preparation for college or sound footings for entry into our increasingly sophisticated work force. _ Jon H. Fleming
